UIT observes Starburst Activity in M100

[M100, UV pic, Astro-1] [M100, visual, Astro-1]

Nasa's Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) observed starburst regions in the inner disk of the majestic Virgo Cluster spiral galaxy M100. This galaxy shows intense star-forming activity at UV wavelengths. IN M100, a UV-bright ring of starburst activity can be seen along the periphery of the galaxy's innermost spiral arms. Through ultraviolet imaging (blue image), the circumnuclear starburst region can be seen with the highest contrast against the cool star background.

Compare to UIT observations of M77, where star formation was observed as well.
